The Best Science Fiction Movies of All Time, Ranked

Science fiction is the genre of extrapolation: take one premise, follow it rigorously, and see what it reveals. The best films in the genre treat their central idea as a question rather than a setting, and they are usually less interested in the future than in the assumptions of the moment they were made in. Technology is the delivery system. The subject is always us.

How we ranked these: Ranked by how rigorously each film follows its own premise, how well its ideas are dramatised rather than explained, and how durable the result is. Only films with a full review in our collection are eligible, which is why this list is shorter than the genre deserves.

  1. Interstellar (2014) poster art for our ranked list

    2014 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Christopher Nolan · Score 92/100

    1. Interstellar

The rare science fiction film where the physics is the emotional engine. Relativity is used to make a father's absence irreversible, and the Miller's planet sequence is the best thing Nolan has directed.

  2. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) poster art for our ranked list

    2017 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Denis Villeneuve · Score 92/100

    2. Blade Runner 2049

A sequel that expands its predecessor's questions instead of answering them. Deakins' photography is the best of his career and the film's willingness to be slow with a blockbuster budget is remarkable.

  3. Inception (2010) poster art for our ranked list

    2010 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Christopher Nolan · Score 94/100

    3. Inception

Five simultaneous timelines executed with real clarity and an emotional core that is genuine grief. The rules are established before they matter and used exactly once in the climax.

  4. The Matrix (1999) poster art for our ranked list

    1999 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski · Score 94/100

    4. The Matrix

Hong Kong choreography, cyberpunk aesthetics, and borrowed philosophy assembled into something that felt genuinely new. Its action is better than almost anything that copied it.

  5. Dune (2021) poster art for our ranked list

    2021 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Denis Villeneuve · Score 91/100

    5. Dune

The first adaptation of Herbert's novel that understands it is about geography and power rather than plot mechanics. Fraser's photography communicates scale better than any exposition could.

  6. Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) poster art for our ranked list

    2022 · Sci-Fi · Dir. Daniel Kwan, Daniel Scheinert · Score 92/100

    6. Everything Everywhere All at Once

A wildly ambitious film that uses maximalist genre chaos to deliver a small story about a mother and a daughter. The multiverse is structural rather than decorative.

  7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) poster art for our ranked list

    2004 · Romance · Dir. Michel Gondry · Score 94/100

    7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

A science fiction premise used for genuinely emotional purposes. Its reverse-chronological structure is load-bearing, and the ending is honest without being cruel.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a science fiction film great rather than merely clever?

Dramatisation. A great science fiction film turns its premise into a decision a character has to make, rather than explaining the premise and then telling a separate story.

Why is Interstellar ranked above The Matrix?

Because Interstellar uses its physics as emotional structure rather than as a setting. The Matrix has better action and a more influential aesthetic, and its ideas are more borrowed.

Is Mad Max: Fury Road science fiction?

It is a post-apocalyptic action film with science fiction elements, which is why it appears in our action collection rather than here. The distinction is a matter of emphasis.

Which science fiction film is the best entry point?

Inception for accessibility and structural clarity, then Blade Runner 2049 for atmosphere, then the original Blade Runner if you want the full context.

Our ranked lists are deliberately opinionated. Each one places films against each other inside a defined frame and explains the ordering, which means they disagree with each other and with us on different days. That is the point.
