Ranked film lists
Our ranked lists do something the review index cannot: they place films against each other inside a defined frame and explain why one sits above another. Each list states its methodology before it starts, and each entry links to the full review so you can check the reasoning.

How our rankings work
We rank by a combination of formal achievement, durability, and influence on subsequent filmmaking. We do not weight box office, awards, or cultural ubiquity, all of which are poor proxies for quality and all of which tend to reward the same films repeatedly.
Only films with a full review in our collection are eligible, which means these lists are shorter than the subject deserves. That is a deliberate trade: we would rather rank twenty films we can defend than a hundred we have not written about.
